Best Engagement Photo Locations in Buffalo NY


Your engagement photos should feel like you. Not like you showed up, stood in a field, smiled at the camera for an hour, and called it a day.

Buffalo has so many incredible places for engagement photos depending on the kind of session you’re dreaming about. We have waterfront sunsets, architecture, gardens, open fields, city streets, quiet nature trails, and locations that can completely change depending on the season.

When I help couples choose a location, I’m usually thinking less about what is simply “pretty” and more about what kind of experience and feeling we want the photos to have.

Do you want something romantic and elegant? Playful and colorful? Moody and cinematic? A little weird? A full-on date night where I happen to be following you around with a camera?

Here are some of my favorite engagement photo locations in Buffalo and Western New York — plus the kind of couple or session I think each one works best for.

1. Delaware Park + Hoyt Lake

If you want the classic Buffalo engagement session without your gallery feeling boring or overly traditional, Delaware Park gives us so much room to play.

There’s Hoyt Lake, stone architecture, bridges, huge trees, grassy areas, walking paths and plenty of little corners that photograph completely differently from one another. It also means we can keep moving throughout your session instead of spending the entire time in one spot.

The area around Hoyt Lake is especially beautiful near golden hour, when the light starts reflecting off the water. 

Perfect for: romantic, nostalgic, candid engagement photos

Best vibe: walking together, picnics, champagne, cozy outfits, dogs, sunset

Best seasons: spring through fall

One of my favorite things about Delaware Park is that it can feel polished and romantic in one direction and completely relaxed and organic five minutes later.

2. Buffalo AKG + Delaware Park Rose Garden

This is one of my favorites for couples who want their engagement photos to feel a little more editorial, colorful or elevated.

The Buffalo AKG gives us modern architecture and clean lines, while the nearby park and Rose Garden can soften the session with greenery and flowers. You can essentially get two different galleries without driving across Buffalo.

I especially love this area for couples who aren't afraid of incorporating color into their outfits or want engagement photos that feel more like something you'd save to Pinterest than traditional portraits.

The Rose Garden sits just across Lincoln Parkway from the AKG and Hoyt Lake area, making the locations especially easy to combine. 

Perfect for: colorful, artsy, modern couples

Best vibe: editorial meets playful

Try wearing: bold pinks, oranges, reds, interesting textures or a dressier first outfit followed by something casual

3. Buffalo Outer Harbor + Wilkeson Pointe

If you're chasing golden light, movement and a big dramatic Buffalo sunset, the Outer Harbor is hard to beat.

You get Lake Erie, tall grasses, open skies, waterfront paths and enough room to actually move around. I love letting couples walk, run, dance, mess with each other and forget for a minute that we're technically taking photos.

Wilkeson Pointe is especially beautiful around sunset because of its wide lake views and open landscape. 

This is also one of those places where the weather can become part of the session instead of ruining it. Windy? Amazing. Moody clouds? Even better.

Perfect for: carefree, cinematic, adventurous sessions

Best vibe: sunset date night

Bring: a blanket, drinks, your dog, sneakers or something you can actually move around in


4. Tifft Nature Preserve

Tifft is such a good option when you want your engagement photos to feel quiet, intimate and nature-focused without traveling far outside Buffalo.

The boardwalks, marsh areas, water and greenery give it a totally different feeling from a traditional park.

Instead of a manicured garden vibe, this feels more organic and tucked away. The boardwalk and surrounding preserve are regularly used for couples and engagement photography because they offer marsh, woodland and waterfront scenery within the city. 

Perfect for: laid-back couples, outdoorsy sessions, earthy styling

Best vibe: soft, intimate and candid

Think: walking hand in hand, sitting together, getting cozy and letting things unfold naturally

5. Canalside + Downtown Buffalo

Not every engagement session needs trees and fields.

If you're city people, let's make it feel like Buffalo.

Canalside gives you waterfront views, boardwalks and the city skyline, and from there we can incorporate downtown streets, parking garages, crosswalks, bars, coffee shops or whatever else fits your relationship.

Canalside is particularly fun around dusk because you can transition from warm evening light into city lights and blue hour. 

I love this option for couples who want something that feels more like a night out together than a traditional engagement session.

Perfect for: urban, stylish or nontraditional couples

Best vibe: downtown date night

Ideas: grab drinks, split a pizza, run across a crosswalk, hit an arcade or end the session at your favorite bar

6. Buffalo City Hall + Niagara Square

If you're dreaming of something more elegant, architectural and editorial, downtown Buffalo has some of the best backdrops.

City Hall and Niagara Square give you incredible Art Deco architecture and a much more dramatic atmosphere than a typical park setting. 

This is where I'd lean into the styling.

Think a black dress, suit, heels, sunglasses, champagne, flash photography — something that feels almost like a fashion shoot while still documenting the way you interact together.

Perfect for: elegant or editorial engagement sessions

Best vibe: vintage city romance

Bonus: pair it with a cocktail somewhere downtown afterward

7. Knox Farm State Park

For the couple dreaming about fields, tall grass and golden sunset light, Knox Farm is one of my favorite Western New York options.

It has open fields, mature trees, fences and that countryside feeling without needing to turn your engagement session into an entire road trip. It's especially popular for late-summer and fall sessions because of the open landscape and warm light. 

This is one of those places where I want you moving constantly — walking through the grass, spinning each other around, sitting together, running, dancing.

Perfect for: romantic, earthy, cinematic photos

Best vibe: barefoot-in-the-grass energy

Best season: late summer through fall

8. Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens

Buffalo weather is unpredictable, so I will always appreciate a location that doesn't require us to beg the clouds to behave.

The Botanical Gardens are incredible for something that feels lush, romantic and almost destination-like without leaving Buffalo.

The greenhouse setting means tons of greenery, interesting architecture and a completely different texture than most engagement locations around the city. It's also a popular local choice for engagement photography. 

Perfect for: romantic, botanical, dreamy sessions

Best vibe: lush and intimate

Especially great for: winter engagement photos when everything outside is brown, snowy or approximately 4 degrees

Just make sure we check the current photography policies and permit requirements before planning your session.

But your engagement photos don't have to happen at a "photo location"

Some of my favorite session ideas actually aren't traditional locations at all.

We could photograph you:

  • making pancakes in your kitchen
  • getting coffee at your favorite café
  • thrifting together
  • playing mini golf
  • ice skating
  • grabbing drinks at your neighborhood bar
  • walking your dogs
  • getting ice cream
  • cooking dinner
  • playing records in your living room
  • wandering around the neighborhood where you first lived together

Your engagement session doesn't have to prove that Buffalo is beautiful.

It should tell me something about the two of you.

How to choose your engagement photo location

Start by asking yourselves what you actually enjoy doing together.

If your perfect Saturday involves hiking with your dog, an editorial downtown session might not feel like you.

If you're constantly trying new restaurants, going to shows and wandering around the city, we probably don't need to put you in a random field because Pinterest told us to.

And if you want a wildly creative session involving a motel, arcade, vintage car, grocery store, roller rink or weird little idea you've been nervous to suggest?

Please suggest it.

That's usually when things get really fun.
